Oregon’s Deadliest Crashes Since 1946

In 1946, the Oregon Department of Transportation began keeping track of fatal traffic crashes. The Oregonian researched and verified the crashes making an interactive map of Oregon showing where the 47 deadliest motor-vehicle crashes occurred.

The deadliest crash on I-5 in Oregon occurred December 23, 1965 when a Greyhound bus lost control on ice and 14 people were killed and 25 injured near Medford.

Another one of the deadliest was a when a tour bus slid on icy condition on Interstate 84 east of Pendleton, crashing through a guardrail and rolling down a steep snowy hill. In that crash 9 people died and 38 were injured on December 30, 2012.

One of the deadliest crashes in Portland was in 1971, when a drunk driver hit a vehicle head-on killing all 7 passengers in it on Northeast Lombard Street near 32nd and 33rd avenues.
