An Albany couple was injured in a crash on Highway 99W near Bethel Road south of Amity.

Oregon State Police report that at about 1:30pm on Saturday March 26, Andy Dowell, age 22 of Salem, was trying to cross 99W from Bethel Road going towards Zena Road. Witnesses said that he pulled his 1996 Ford Ranger pickup truck up alongside another vehicle that was turning left at the intersection but he didn’t stop before he started through.

Dowell’s pickup crashed into the right rear of a 2002 Ford Taurus driven by Wilhelm G. Loeffler, age 82 of Albany.

Dowell refused medical treatment, although he had visible minor injuries. Loeffler was transported with non-life threatening injuries to Salem Hospital in an ambulance. Loeffler’s wife and passenger, Maria E. Loeffler, age 81, was airlifted to Salem Hospital with critical injuries but they are also not considered life threatening.

All of the occupants were using seatbelts and both vehicles’ airbags deployed. The police investigation is ongoing, and no citations were immediately issued.

We send special thoughts to the Loefflers for a speedy recovery to full health, and we hope that they will receive the support they need in the days ahead.
