Woman Critically Injured in Accident with 15-Year-Old Driver
OregonLive.com reports that the investigation into a pedestrian accident on Monday afternoon on Oregon 211 close to Sandy that left a woman in critical condition is ongoing.
According to the article, the 19-year-old Stevie Rae Urwin was walking a leashed dog on the northbound shoulder of Oregon 211, close to Southwest Bornstedt Road at about 4:30 p.m. A 1976 Chevrolet truck, driven by 15-year-old Neal A. Bieri, an unlicensed driver, was traveling through a left curve of the road when the woman crossed the highway from the east side into the northbound lane. In a statement given to police, the boy attempted to brake to avoid hitting the woman and swerved to the left, but the right side of the truck struck the woman.
Urwin was taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center via ambulance and is reported to be in critical condition. After some time, her dog was located and taken to a veterinarian for treatment. Neal, the young driver, was uninjured in the collision and remained at the scene of the Oregon pedestrian accident. Police are investigating the circumstances that lead to him being behind the wheel, as well as the cause of the crash.
Neal was driving with a driver’s permit and was reportedly being followed by his mother in another vehicle at the time of the accident. According to the article, legal action regarding his lack of a valid driver’s license is still pending. In Oregon, anyone under the age of 18 who has a provisional instruction permit can only operate a motor vehicle if they are accompanied by someone who has a valid driver’s license, is at least 21-years-old, and is sitting next to the teen.
