Update on Girl Injured by Shotput at Molalla High School

Date: April 12, 2011
Location: Molalla High School
Name: Shania Rice

Shania Rice was airlifted to OHSU by helicopter on April 12 after a three-pound discus hit her in the back of her head at the Molalla High School track.

Superintendent Wayne Kostur has reportedly said that Rice entered the discus landing area during practice. The impact of the discus cracked Rice’s skull but appears to have had no brain trauma. Rice was listed in fair condition at OHSU.

Several coaches and team members were at the track and were witnesses to the accident.

We continue to wish Ms. Rice a speedy recovery, and hope that the school will be able to prevent entry into the landing area during future practices.
