Interactive Map Shows Pedestrian and Cyclist Deaths in Portland Area
Pedestrian and cyclist deaths have increased each year since 2009. Since these deaths were creating a big concern, federal officials launched and initiative in September to increase pedestrian and cyclist safety. Including Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas and Clark counties, pedestrian and cyclist deaths are matching the national upward trend.
The graph below shows the number each year but keep in mind national level data has not been released yet for 2013.
Regardless of the trend, these deaths are still a much smaller portion compared to motorist deaths. The main difference is that motorist deaths have dropped 13% since 2009, while pedestrian and cyclist deaths have increased.
