Commercial Driver Cited after Oregon Trucking Accident

03/28/11

Date: March 25, 2011
Location: Highway 97 North of Klamath Falls
Names: Charnjit Singh, Michael Dixon

A commercial driver was cited for Driving While Suspended and Careless Driving following a traffic crash on Highway 97 a little north of Klamath Falls.

On Friday March 25, 2011 at about 2:19am emergency responders were called to a crash site involving two commercial vehicles on Highway 97 at Algoma Road. Police reported that Charnjit Singh, age 27 of Sacramento, California and driving for GS Motor Corporation, was southbound in a commercial truck pulling a semi-trailer when he lost control on the icy road and crashed into a guardrail. His vehicle came to rest blocking both the north and southbound lanes. A northbound commercial truck driven by Michael Dixon, age 61 of Klamath Falls and driving for Pepsi Cola Bottling Company, was unable to stop and slammed into Singh’s semi-trailer.

Dixon was transported to Sky Lakes Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The highway was closed for three hours for cleanup of 60 gallons of spilled diesel.

We are certainly glad that this accident didn’t result in more serious injuries to either driver, and that other passenger vehicles were able to avoid becoming involved in this crash. It could have ended up a lot worse than it did. Besides the dangerous icy road conditions, having a commercial driver at the wheel with a suspended driver’s license can compromise the safety of others.

Even though spring has technically arrived, icy roadways are still a danger in Oregon. Drivers need to be alert for icy road conditions. Oregon State Police and the Oregon Dept. of Transportation ask everyone to slow down, increase following distances so you can safely stop, stay alert and drive carefully.
