Fiery Car Crash on Highway 101 Hospitalizes One, Two Others Injured

The driver of a car that burst into flames was pulled from the fiery crash and hospitalized in stable condition.

News releases from the Oregon State Police stated that at about 4:06pm Nathan Wells Biel, age 25 of Lincoln City, was driving south in a 2005 Mazda RX8 on Highway 101 near milepost 130 when he lost control in a curve and careened into an oncoming 2009 GMC Sierra pickup truck being driven north by James R. Reed, age 60, also of Lincoln City.

After the impact, Biel’s Mazda hit a tree and caught fire. His passenger, Joshua D. Mehl, age 25 of Albany, was able to pull him partially out of the wreckage before emergency responders and other drivers arrived to help. The Mazda was later fully engulfed in flames.

Biel was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis where he was reported to be in stable condition.

Reed and Mehl suffered minor injuries. Both men were transported to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital and later released.

All occupants of the vehicles were believed to be using safety restraints.
