Grace C. Throckmorton, 23, of Portland, Oregon, died December 2, 2009, after she pulled her car into the path of a Jeep Cherokee<\/a> driven by Michael D. Backman, 27, of Dayton. The accident occurred around 4:15 PM.<\/p>\n

According to Salem-News.com, Washington County Sheriff\u2019s Office deputies said Throckmorton had been driving east on SW Bell Road and was stopped at Highway 99W, trying to cross the highway.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As she entered traffic, she pulled her 1999 four-door Honda Accord into the path of an oncoming Jeep driven by Backman. Sgt. Dave Thompson, of the sheriff\u2019s office, told Salem-News.com that Backman \u201cdidn\u2019t have time to brake, and he hit Ms. Throckmorton directly in the driver\u2019s side door.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the crash, both vehicles spun around, coming to rest on the guardrail near the center median. Throckmorton was wearing a seat belt, and the sheriff\u2019s office said alcohol did not appear to be involved.<\/p>\n

Throckmorton was pronounced dead at the scene. Backman suffered minor injuries and was taken to Providence Newberg Medical Center.<\/p>\n

No charges or citations are expected.<\/p>\n

Oregon State Police assisted sheriff\u2019s deputies in the crash investigation, along with the Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team.<\/p>\n

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours during the investigation.<\/p>\n

We are saddened by this shocking crash, where so much is uncertain. We can only offer our condolences and prayers to Throckmorton\u2019s family, and send our wishes Backman\u2019s way as well, in hopes that he has no lasting repercussions from this accident.
