A Portland man and his visiting friend from Alaska were struck by a pickup truck in downtown Portland.
\nAt about 9pm at the intersection of Southwest Fifth Avenue and Southwest Alder St., Lucas Stockburger, age 23 of Northeast Portland, and Pierre Thompson, age 36 of Alaska, were crossing the street when they were both struck by a green Dodge Dakota traveling south on Fifth Avenue and making a left turn onto Alder Street.<\/p>\n

The truck struck Thompson on the knee and Stockburger was struck in the lower back. Thompson was treated for minor injuries at the scene; Stockburger was transported to a local hospital.<\/p>\n

According to reports at the scene of the accident, the driver wasn\u2019t paying attention as he made his turn and hit both pedestrians. The driver was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian.<\/p>\n

We hope that Mr. Stockburger and Mr. Thompson will recover quickly from their injuries, and we are so glad that this accident didn\u2019t result in more serious injuries to both of them.<\/p>\n

If a pedestrian is hit in a crosswalk, it is generally considered the driver’s fault. In most pedestrian accidents in Oregon<\/a>, the law will consider it to be the driver’s fault, and the pedestrian or the pedestrian’s family will be able to get legal compensation.
