Southeast Portland has one of the highest concentrations of bicycle-car related crashes in the city. Data from the Oregon Department of Transportation\u2019s<\/a> Crash Analysis and Reporting Unit shows 1,600 reported incidents between 2009 and 2013. Among the top six most dangerous roads for cyclists is Powell Boulevard where 22-year-old Alistair Corkett los his right leg in a collision at Southeast 26th<\/sup> Avenue.<\/p>\n

The Oregon Department of Transportation is already talking about $3.8 million in safety upgrades for Powell Boulevard between 20th<\/sup> and 34th<\/sup> avenues by 2017. Some of the plans include more traffic signs, left turn signals onto Powell from side streets, cutting back roadside foliage, and adding lights.<\/p>\n

The top six Southeast Portland streets account for 14% of bicycle-car collisions out of all 10 Portland streets during the 5-year period.<\/p>\n

The top 10 and the number of bicycle-car crashes are:<\/p>\n

  1. Southeast Division, 59<\/li>\n
  2. Northeast Broadway Street, 49<\/li>\n
  3. Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard, 42<\/li>\n
  4. Southeast Powell Boulevard, 37<\/li>\n
  5. East Burnside Street, 35<\/li>\n
  6. Northwest Broadway, 31<\/li>\n
  7. Southeast Stark Street, 30<\/li>\n
  8. Southwest Capitol Highway, 28<\/li>\n
  9. Southeast Holgate Boulevard<\/li>\n
  10. Southeast Foster Road, 26<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Foster Road is looking at new safety improvements soon, including bike lanes on both sides of the street.<\/p>\n

    Despite these fatalities, Portland still remains a relatively safe city for bicyclists compared to other larger U.S. cities. \u00a0We encourage cyclists and drivers to practice safe driving\/cycling practices and stay alert and aware while on the road.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
