But if you want a lawyer to work on a contingency basis, meaning that the lawyer does not take payment up front, but gets paid only if he wins your case, it can be very hard to find a lawyer for a small or minor accident case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For a while, <a href=\"http:\/\/thyroid.about.com\/cs\/newsresearch\/a\/insurancepay.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>insurance companies were refusing to pay more than a few hundred dollars on small or minor accident claims<\/strong>,<\/a> since they knew that injured people could never get lawyers for them-that is, until the Oregon Legislature realized insurance companies weren&#8217;t paying fair, and enacted Oregon Revised Statue 20.080.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">ORS 20.080 makes it possible to settle these cases for a fair value, and here&#8217;s the good part:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>You can usually settle your case yourself, without a lawyer<\/strong>. That means you get to keep every dollar you get. No attorney fees! \u00a0However, you must follow the statute exactly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>If that&#8217;s not possible, ORS 20.080 has a way that you can oft<span style=\"color: #000000;\">en <strong>force the insurance company to pay your attorney fees<\/strong>. <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That is not<\/span> a misprint<\/strong>. Eventually, the Oregon legislature came together to level the playing field between consumers and manipulative insurance companies, and enacted the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlegislature.gov\/bills_laws\/lawsstatutes\/2013ors020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Oregon Revised Statute 20.080.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">ORS 20.080 makes it possible for those injured to find an Oregon lawyer for any case worth $10,000 or less, as of Jan. 1, 2012.
