Accurate estimates require full information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That said, there are two basic kinds of &#8220;damages&#8221; you can recover for a\u00a0personal injury case in Oregon: Economic Damages and Non-economic Damages. In the past, these were called &#8220;General Damages&#8221; and &#8220;Special Damages,&#8221; respectively, but the proper terms are Economic and Non-economic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Economic Damages<\/strong>\u00a0is compensation for any money you&#8217;ve lost due to the collision.\u00a0 This includes:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>money to repair your car (or the full value of the car if it was totaled)<\/li>\n<li>money to pay for medical bills<\/li>\n<li>money to pay for household services that you could not do because of your injuries<\/li>\n<li>lost income due to injuries that prevented you from working<\/li>\n<li>money for future economic losses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Noneconomic Damages<\/strong>\u00a0means money for injuries that are not as easily given a numerical value.\u00a0 Some examples are:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>pain<\/li>\n<li>humiliation<\/li>\n<li>mental suffering<\/li>\n<li>emotional distress<\/li>\n<li>inconvenience<\/li>\n<li>interference with normal activities<\/li>\n<li>damage to a person&#8217;s reputation<\/li>\n<li>aggravation to a previous injury<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Punitive Damages.\u00a0<\/strong>In the right case, it can make sense to try to get punitive damages, but most injured people are better off seeking only Economic and Non-economic Damages.\u00a0 In Oregon, the State takes 70% of any\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pdxinjurylaw.com\/es\/faqs\/what-are-punitive-damages-for-a-personal-injury-case\/\">Punitive Damages<\/a>.\u00a0 Then your lawyer will typically take 20%, leaving you with only 10%, which is then taxable.\u00a0 In the end, an injured person usually only ends up with about 10% of punitive damages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When we estimate what a case is worth, we use our experience and knowledge to try to predict what a jury would do with your case.\u00a0 We will only make this estimate after we have all of the relevant information.\u00a0 At that time, our <a href=\"\/es\/portland-personal-injury-lawyer\/\">injury lawyers in Portland<\/a> will tell you the probable value that we believe your case has.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Be wary of any lawyer who tries to tell you how much your personal injury case is worth during your first phone call or meeting.
