The Oregon Department of Transportation is looking to spend $5 million to improve pedestrian and driver safety at five major intersections on 82^nd Avenue in East Portland. All of the 5 chosen intersections are ranked in the top 5% for the most dangerous in Oregon.

The safety improvements will be added on the 7.3-mile stretch of 82^nd between Northeast Killingsworth Street and Southeast Johnson Creek Boulevard. City planners are hoping to make it a safer place to walk along and also an alternative for Interstate 205 vehicle traffic.

The newly expanded Portland Community College campus on Division is attracting thousands of new students to the area, resulting in increased pedestrian, bicyclist, and transit usage.

At the Burnside, Stark, Washington, Mill, and Division street intersections with 82^nd, each traffic signal will be replaced with new, more visible lights. Pedestrians will have curb cuts to accommodate wheelchairs and more push button devices will be added at crosswalks. There will also be improved street signs and a left-turn arrow to make it safer to turn onto Burnside.

Ultimately the goal of the project is to cut down on accidents in the area and make it a safer area for all types of traffic.
